Official stream data, spouse applications, delay risks and a decision-ready checklist for Temporary Graduate applicants.
Waiting for a graduate visa can affect work, travel and every next-step plan. The latest 485 visa processing time now differs sharply by stream. This guide explains the official September 2026 figures, what they measure, why cases take longer and how to keep an application ready for assessment from lodgement.
Quick answer: 50% of Post-Higher Education Work cases finalised in 11 days and 90% in 3 months. For Post-Vocational Education Work, the markers are 45 days and 4 months.
These figures describe recently decided applications. They are not service guarantees or personal deadlines. The Department’s visa processing times guide also warns that its tool does not assess an individual file.
For eligibility, stay periods and stream rules, read VEM’s Temporary Graduate visa guide. The discussion below focuses on the time between valid lodgement and a Home Affairs decision.
485 visa processing time 2026
The current processing time for 485 visa applications depends on the selected stream. Home Affairs published the following historical percentiles on 4 September 2026.
A fast median does not promise a fast grant
A decision-ready application may be finalised quickly. Identity checks, document requests or external verification can move another file beyond the published 90% marker.

Why stream times differ
Each stream has distinct evidence and verification work. Caseload composition also changes when Home Affairs finalises older or more complex files.
Higher education stream
This pathway covers eligible bachelor, honours, masters and doctoral qualifications. Assessment centres on the Australian study requirement, qualification level, English evidence and common visa criteria.
The September median was unusually short. It should not replace a realistic contingency plan through the 90% point.
Vocational stream
This route applies to eligible associate degree, diploma or trade graduates. The qualification must relate closely to the nominated occupation.
A suitable skills assessment or proof of application may require verification. Review the skills assessment process before lodgement.
Regional second visa
Eligible graduates may seek a second 485 after regional study and residence. Home Affairs may verify where the applicant studied and lived.
The public tool did not provide a distinct percentile row for this pathway during the check. Read the 485 visa extension guide and avoid applying a first-stream estimate automatically.

485 spouse processing time
Home Affairs does not publish a separate 485 spouse visa processing time in its public guide. It lists the two primary subclass 485 stream categories shown above.
A partner may be included before decision or apply later as a subsequent entrant. The timing depends on the application route, relationship proof and required checks.
Do not use Partner visa times
Subclass 820, 801, 309 and 100 statistics cover different visas. They do not estimate a subclass 485 family-member application.
What can delay a decision
A clean upload does not control Department workload. It can, however, reduce avoidable pauses and requests for further information.
Incomplete evidence
Missing completion evidence, unreadable scans or absent translations can prevent assessment. Upload the required document, not a screenshot of an email about it.
Conflicting information
Names, addresses, study dates and relationship histories should align across forms. Explain genuine discrepancies and provide name-change evidence where relevant.
Health and character
Further medical review can extend the assessment. Police certificates from several countries may also require external checks.
An Australian Federal Police check must follow the correct purpose and identity settings. VEM’s AFP check guide covers the practical preparation.
English and assessment checks
The accepted test, score, format and test date must satisfy the visa rules at lodgement. An expired result cannot be repaired by a high score.
Rules changed for tests taken from 7 August 2025. Check VEM’s 485 English test guide against the current visa page.
Caseload and verification
Application volumes, policy priorities, and complex older cases affect monthly data. Education, employment or relationship evidence may also be verified externally.

Time after medical checks
There is no official fixed grant period after a medical examination. Health clearance only resolves one part of the assessment. Other criteria can remain open.
Results are normally sent electronically by the panel clinic. A case can be referred for further medical assessment when more information is required.
Booking availability and requested examinations vary. The Bupa visa medical guide explains appointments inside Australia.
Status while waiting
A valid onshore lodgement may result in a bridging visa grant. The grant notice states when it starts and which conditions apply.
Work rights
Do not assume that lodgement changes the current visa immediately. Check the active visa and its conditions through VEVO before changing work arrangements.
Overseas travel
A Bridging Visa A does not permit return to Australia after departure. An eligible applicant normally needs a Bridging Visa B before travelling.
Grant timing is never guaranteed. Check the current bridging visa, return date and unresolved application before booking travel.
Health insurance
Maintain adequate health cover for the period required by the visa settings. A student policy may not remain suitable after study ends.
Policy start dates and evidence should align with the application plan. See the 485 health insurance guide for common transition issues.
How to track a 485 case
Use ImmiAccount to view the application, messages and document requests. The screen status does not predict a grant date.
1. Check messages
Open the application and read every correspondence item. Note any response deadline immediately.
2. Review attachments
Confirm that uploads are readable and placed under the correct applicant and evidence category.
3. Update changes
Notify passport, address, contact and family changes through the available official process.
4. Compare the live guide
Recheck the exact stream. Monthly 485 visa processing times can rise or fall as different files are finalised.
VEM’s visa status guide explains the difference between ImmiAccount and VEVO. One tracks an application; the other shows current visa details and conditions.

A decision-ready checklist
The following checks help control risks before submission. They do not create priority processing.
- Correct stream: match the qualification, occupation and regional history to one pathway.
- Application timing: calculate from the official course completion date, not the ceremony.
- English evidence: confirm the accepted format, scores, and test-date rules.
- Study evidence: reconcile CRICOS duration, transcripts, completion letters and any credits.
- Skills assessment: follow the relevant authority requirements for the vocational pathway.
- Health cover: arrange suitable evidence for the intended graduate period.
- Character records: request required police certificates early and use correct details.
- Family evidence: document identity and genuine relationships for every included applicant.
