Updated 7 September 2026 · Employer Nomination Scheme Guide
Current Competent English scores for subclass 186, including the revised PTE Academic framework, partner Functional English and stream-specific rules.
The 186 visa English requirements depend on who is applying and which Employer Nomination Scheme stream is used. A primary applicant in the Direct Entry or Temporary Residence Transition stream generally needs Competent English at the time of application. A Labour Agreement applicant must meet the level written into the relevant agreement. Adult family members face a different Functional English rule.
Quick answer: For a PTE Academic test taken on or after 7 August 2025, the usual PTE score for a 186 visa is Listening 47, Reading 48, Writing 51 and Speaking 54. IELTS Academic or General Training requires at least 6.0 in each of the four components. There is no overall-score shortcut.
English requirements by 186 visa stream
Subclass 186 is a permanent employer-sponsored visa, not a points-tested skilled visa. VEM’s Employer Nomination Scheme visa 186 guide explains its three streams and the connected employer nomination. English evidence must align with the chosen stream; meeting a previous subclass 482 requirement does not automatically prove the 186 standard.
| Stream |
Primary applicant requirement |
Key timing point |
| Direct Entry |
Competent English, normally shown by a qualifying passport or approved test. |
The requirement is assessed at application. Do not lodge first and plan to pass later. |
| Temporary Residence Transition |
Competent English. A result used for a previous temporary visa must still meet the 186 definition and validity period. |
Evidence should exist when the 186 application is lodged. |
| Labour Agreement |
English suitable for the nominated occupation as specified in the approved labour agreement. |
Read the actual agreement; do not automatically substitute the standard Competent English table. |
Is there an English exemption for the primary applicant?
Holding a qualifying passport is a recognised way to prove Competent English, not a discretionary waiver. Current legal commentary notes that no separate class of ENS applicants has been specified for a general English exemption in the Direct Entry or TRT criteria. The Labour Agreement stream is different because the agreement itself sets the acceptable level or concession.
English is a time-of-application issue for Direct Entry and TRT
A primary applicant should not lodge without valid Competent English evidence and expect to provide it months later. The test date, score report, passport and application date should be checked together before payment.
PTE requirement for 186 visa in 2026
For PTE Academic taken on or after 7 August 2025, the required component scores are uneven. Home Affairs does not publish an additional overall minimum for Competent English; every listed component threshold must be achieved in the accepted test.
Can a high overall PTE score compensate for one low component?
No. An applicant with an overall score above 54 can still miss Competent English if, for example, Speaking is 53 or Listening is 46. The Department assesses the four component minimums. Do not add results from different PTE sittings unless a specific legal provision clearly permits the evidence being proposed.

For TOEFL iBT, a current test taker must register through the “Taking TOEFL for Australia” pathway. IELTS Academic and General Training both satisfy the test-type requirement if all component scores are met. Home Affairs may accept IELTS One Skill Retake for eligible visas, but the subclass-specific rules and score report still need checking.
Can you use a PTE or IELTS result from before 7 August 2025?
Potentially. Home Affairs created transitional rules for the previous test versions. Competent English results from a test taken on or before 6 August 2025 may remain usable until 6 August 2028, but subclass 186 also requires the test to have been taken within three years immediately before the visa application. The earlier of those limits controls.
| PTE test date |

L47, R48, W51, S54 |
Test must normally be within three years before the 186 application. |
| On or before 6 August 2025 |
At least 50 in each component |
Potentially accepted until 6 August 2028, but still subject to the three-year subclass validity rule. |
Why the test date matters more than the article date
PTE Academic kept the same product name even though the test and score equivalencies changed. The correct table is selected using the date the applicant sat the test, not the date the result was downloaded, the nomination was lodged or a website was updated. VEM’s guide to Australian visa English-test changes compares the revised frameworks across common visa subclasses.
Can you meet the 186 English requirement without IELTS or PTE?
Yes. A primary applicant can prove Competent English by being a citizen of, and holding a valid passport issued by, Canada, New Zealand, the Republic of Ireland, the United Kingdom or the United States. Residence, study or employment in one of those countries is not enough without the required citizenship and passport combination.
Other approved tests can also be used. This means “without IELTS” does not necessarily mean “without English evidence”. A university letter showing English-medium study may help an adult secondary applicant prove Functional English, but it does not replace the primary applicant’s Competent English requirement for Direct Entry or TRT.

186 visa partner English requirement
A partner or other secondary applicant who was at least 18 at the time of application generally needs to demonstrate Functional English before a decision is made or pay the second instalment of the visa application charge when requested. The current second instalment for an adult secondary subclass 186 applicant is AUD 4,890. It is separate from the ordinary additional-applicant charge.
| Evidence option |
Functional English rule |
Practical point |
| Qualifying passport |
Citizen and valid passport holder of Canada, New Zealand, Ireland, the UK or USA. |
Passport evidence can avoid a test. |
| Current PTE Academic |
Overall score of at least 24 for a test on or after 7 August 2025. |
Functional English uses an overall score, unlike Competent English. |
| Current IELTS |
Average band score of at least 4.5. |
Academic or General Training may be used. |
| English-medium qualification |
A degree, higher degree, diploma or trade certificate requiring at least two years of full-time study or training, with all instruction in English. |
Provide the award, transcripts and a detailed institution letter where needed. |
| Australian study |
At least one year of full-time study, or part-time equivalent, towards an eligible award where all instruction was in English. |
Evidence must address duration and medium of instruction. |
| No Functional English evidence |
Pay the second instalment when Home Affairs requests it. |
Budget AUD 4,890 per affected adult secondary applicant. |
Functional English test validity is shorter
A Functional English test is generally required within 12 months before the visa application. Earlier Functional English results taken on or before 6 August 2025 had transitional use only until 6 August 2026, subject to the visa rules, so they should not be presented as current evidence for a new application in September 2026. Education and passport pathways have separate evidentiary requirements.

Common English-evidence mistakes
- Using the old PTE score of 50 in every component for a test taken after 7 August 2025.
- Checking only the PTE overall score when Competent English requires four component minimums.
- Lodging a Direct Entry or TRT application before valid primary-applicant evidence exists.
- Assuming English used for a 482 visa remains valid and sufficient for subclass 186.
- Treating study in the UK, USA, Canada, Ireland, or New Zealand as equivalent to citizenship plus a qualifying passport.
- Applying the standard Competent English table without checking a Labour Agreement concession or requirement.
- Forgetting Functional English evidence or the AUD 4,890 budget for an adult partner.
- Booking an at-home or fully online test that Home Affairs does not accept.
How VEM can help with a subclass 186 application
English is only one part of an Employer Nomination Scheme application. The employer nomination, stream, occupation, salary, skills assessment, work experience and timing must also align. VEM’s employer-sponsored visa guide explains how subclass 186 fits alongside temporary and regional employer pathways.
Check your English evidence before lodgement
VEM can review the 186 stream, test date, score report, passport and adult family-member evidence as part of the wider nomination and visa plan.
FAQs
What is the English requirement for a 186 visa in 2026?
Direct Entry and TRT primary applicants generally need Competent English at application. Labour Agreement applicants must satisfy the level specified in the relevant agreement.
What PTE score is required for a 186 visa?
For PTE Academic taken on or after 7 August 2025: Listening 47, Reading 48, Writing 51 and Speaking 54. Each component must meet its threshold.
Do I need an overall PTE score for subclass 186?
Competent English is assessed using the four component minimums; a high overall result does not repair a component below the threshold.
Is IELTS Academic or General accepted for visa 186?
Both may be accepted. Competent English requires at least 6.0 in Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking—not merely an overall 6.0.
Can I use a PTE result taken before 7 August 2025?
Potentially. The old requirement was 50 in each component. It may be accepted until 6 August 2028, but the subclass 186 three-year test-validity rule still applies.
Can I apply for a 186 visa without IELTS?
Yes, if you prove the required English through another approved test or the qualifying citizenship-and-passport pathway. Labour Agreement terms may set a different standard.
Does my partner need IELTS for a 186 visa?
Not necessarily. An adult partner generally needs Functional English, which can be shown through a qualifying passport, approved test or specified English-medium education. Otherwise, the AUD 4,890 second instalment may apply.
Can I provide my English test after lodging the 186 application?
A Direct Entry or TRT primary applicant should have valid Competent English evidence at the time of application. Adult secondary applicants can generally demonstrate Functional English before decision or pay the requested second instalment.
