English Tests Visa Requirements Changes Australia: 2026 Guide
Australian visa English requirements 2026
Australia changed its approved English tests and score equivalencies on 7 August 2025. This guide explains the current English test for Australian visa applications, the updated PTE component scores, the 485 visa IELTS requirement, whether a subclass 482 visa Australia without IELTS is possible, and the PTE score for 186 visa applicants.
Home Affairs confirms that the approved English-test framework changed on 7 August 2025. The Functional, Vocational, Competent, Proficient and Superior English pages were last updated on 2 February 2026.
The official Temporary Graduate visa pages were updated on 1 July 2026. Visa-specific rules can differ from the general English levels, particularly for subclass 485.
This article is a planning guide. Check the exact visa subclass, stream, test date, validity period and exemption rules before lodging. A score that works for one visa may not work for another.
Quick answer: did Australia lower its visa English requirements?
Not a universal reduction
The phrase Australia visa English test requirement lowered is only partly accurate. Some numerical scores changed, but the purpose was to revise test equivalencies, not to reduce every visa standard.
PTE now uses uneven components
For several English levels, the current PTE model sets different minimums for Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. A strong overall score cannot compensate for a component below the required minimum.
More approved test options
Depending on the English level and visa, approved options may include IELTS, PTE Academic, TOEFL iBT, CELPIP General, MET, OET, LANGUAGECERT Academic and Cambridge C1 Advanced.
What changed in Australia’s English test requirements?
The new framework took effect on 7 August 2025. The changes affect accepted test providers, score equivalencies, test formats, retakes and the way results taken before the change may be used.
New test optionsCELPIP General, LANGUAGECERT Academic and MET became recognised options for relevant visa English levels.
New PTE equivalenciesMany PTE thresholds changed from equal scores in all four skills to different component minimums.
Secure test-centre ruleCompletely online, remote-proctored and at-home English tests are not accepted for Australian visa purposes.
Retake optionsIELTS One Skill Retake and MET Single Section Retake may be accepted for eligible visas, but acceptance is visa-specific.
Old results transitionResults from tests taken on or before 6 August 2025 may remain usable for a limited period, depending on the visa and English level.
TOEFL registration pathwayApplicants taking TOEFL iBT for visa purposes must select the Australia-specific registration pathway identified by Home Affairs.
Which English tests are accepted for Australian visas?
The accepted English test Australia visa options depend on the visa and the required English level. Not every test is available for every level, and a university or professional registration body may impose separate requirements.

Current PTE and IELTS scores by English level
General English levels are used by many Australian visa pathways. They are not interchangeable with visa-specific requirements such as the subclass 485 standard.

PTE score required for 485 visa applications
The PTE score for 485 visa applicants is visa-specific. It is not the same as the general Competent English table. For a PTE Academic test taken under the current framework, the reference thresholds are:
55Overall
40Listening
42Reading
41Writing
39Speaking
Therefore, the PTE score required for 485 visa purposes is not satisfied by an overall score of 55 alone. Every component minimum must also be met.
485 visa IELTS requirement
The current 485 visa IELTS requirement is generally an average band score of 6.5, with at least 5.5 in Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. Check the relevant instrument and visa page for your test date and circumstances.
Timing matters for subclass 485
Subclass 485 has strict rules about when the English test must be taken and how recent it must be at lodgement. Do not assume the three-year validity used for some skilled visa English levels applies to a 485 application.
PTE score for 482 visa applicants
The PTE score for 482 visa applicants generally reflects the Vocational English standard for the Skills in Demand visa, unless a visa-specific exemption, Labour Agreement concession or other approved arrangement applies.

IELTS Academic or General Training
At least 5 in Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking
Can you apply for a subclass 482 visa Australia without IELTS?
Yes, a subclass 482 visa Australia without IELTS may be possible, but “without IELTS” does not necessarily mean “without English evidence”. You may be able to:
Use another approved English test such as PTE Academic, TOEFL iBT, CELPIP General, MET, OET or LANGUAGECERT Academic.
Rely on qualifying passport evidence where the applicable English rules recognise citizenship and a valid passport from Canada, New Zealand, Ireland, the United Kingdom or the United States.
Use a visa-specific exemption or concession where the subclass, stream, nominated occupation, Labour Agreement or personal circumstances allow it.
Do not claim an exemption based only on general internet advice. The employer nomination, visa stream and the applicant’s circumstances must be checked against the rules in force at lodgement.
PTE score for 186 visa applicants
The PTE score for 186 visa, also searched as the 186 visa PTE score, generally follows the Competent English requirement for the primary Employer Nomination Scheme applicant, unless an exemption applies.
47Listening
48Reading
51Writing
54Speaking
For IELTS, the usual Competent English reference is at least 6.0 in each component. The correct requirement may depend on whether the application is under the Temporary Residence Transition, Direct Entry or Labour Agreement stream and whether an exemption applies.
Can you still use a test taken before 7 August 2025?
Possibly. Home Affairs provides transitional treatment for earlier results, but the permitted period depends on the English level and visa subclass.

General transition reference
Important warning
Functional English
Earlier results may remain usable until 6 August 2026, depending on the visa
The result usually needs to satisfy the visa’s own recency requirement.
Vocational, Competent, Proficient and Superior English
Earlier results may remain usable until 6 August 2028, depending on the visa
A specific subclass may impose a shorter validity period.
Subclass 485
Visa-specific test-date rules apply
Do not assume a result remains valid merely because it fits a general English category.
IELTS One Skill Retake, MET retakes and online tests
IELTS One Skill Retake
Home Affairs accepts IELTS results containing One Skill Retake for eligible visas. Check the exact subclass before relying on the retake.
MET Single Section Retake
A MET Single Section Retake may be accepted where the relevant visa permits it. Acceptance should not be assumed across every subclass.
At-home tests
Remote-proctored formats such as IELTS Online, TOEFL Home Edition, OET@Home, CELPIP Online and similar at-home tests are not accepted for visa purposes.
How to choose the right English test for an Australian visa
Check
Why it matters
Identify the exact visa and stream
Subclass 485, subclass 482 and subclass 186 use different standards and exemptions.
Compare every component
A high overall score may still fail a component-based requirement.
Check the test format
An at-home result may be unusable even if the score is high enough.
Check result validity at lodgement
Different subclasses apply different recency periods.
Consider future migration stages
A score suitable for a Student visa may not satisfy subclass 485 or a later skilled visa.
Check points-test goals
Applicants targeting subclasses 189, 190 or 491 may aim for Proficient or Superior English to claim more points.
Common mistakes to avoid
Booking an online or at-home test that Home Affairs does not accept.
Using the pre-7 August 2025 PTE score table for a newer test.
Checking only the PTE overall score and ignoring component minimums.
Assuming the 485 visa English requirement is the same as Competent English.
Assuming “without IELTS” means no English evidence is required for subclass 482.
Using a university admission score as proof that the Student visa requirement is met.
Relying on an English exemption without checking the exact visa stream and legislation.
Taking the test too early, so the result expires before visa lodgement.
Claiming Proficient or Superior English points without meeting every component threshold.
English test for Australian visa FAQs
Was the Australia visa English test requirement lowered?
Some numerical scores decreased while others increased or became uneven across components. The change is better understood as a revised equivalency framework rather than a universal reduction in English standards.
What is the PTE score for 485 visa applications?
The current reference is an overall PTE Academic score of 55, with at least 40 in Listening, 42 in Reading, 41 in Writing and 39 in Speaking. Check the test-date and lodgement rules for the subclass 485 application.
What is the 485 visa IELTS requirement?
The current reference is an average IELTS score of 6.5, with at least 5.5 in each of Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking.
Can I apply for a subclass 482 visa Australia without IELTS?
Potentially. You may use another approved English test or qualify for an exemption. However, most primary applicants still need to demonstrate the applicable English standard unless a specific exemption or concession applies.
What is the PTE score for 482 visa applications?
For Vocational English under the current PTE framework, the reference component scores are Listening 33, Reading 36, Writing 29 and Speaking 24.

For Competent English, the current PTE component minimums are Listening 47, Reading 48, Writing 51 and Speaking 54, unless the applicant qualifies for an exemption or a different stream-specific arrangement.
Are online English tests accepted for Australian visas?
No. Home Affairs does not accept tests delivered completely online, remotely proctored or at home. The test must be completed in an approved secure testing environment.
Can I use an English test taken before 7 August 2025?
Possibly. Transitional rules allow some older results to remain usable for a limited period, but the exact answer depends on the visa subclass, English level, test date and result validity at lodgement.
Check the correct English pathway before booking a test
English evidence should be planned around the visa subclass, stream, test date and future migration pathway. VEM can review the applicable requirement and identify whether a test, alternative evidence or exemption may be available.
From 7 August 2025, Australia expanded the list of accepted English tests and introduced revised score thresholds for PTE Academic. IELTS score requirements for Functional, Vocational, Competent, Proficient and Superior English remained broadly unchanged.
Yes. PTE Academic is accepted for eligible Australian visa applications when taken at a secure test centre. The score requirements depend on the visa subclass and English level required.
For PTE Academic tests taken under the current rules, subclass 485 applicants generally need an overall score of 55, with at least 40 in Listening, 42 in Reading, 41 in Writing and 39 in Speaking.
For the Skills in Demand visa subclass 482, the current PTE Academic benchmark is 33 in Listening, 36 in Reading, 29 in Writing and 24 in Speaking, unless an exemption or Labour Agreement variation applies.
For subclass 186, applicants generally need Competent English. For PTE Academic tests taken on or after 7 August 2025, this means 47 in Listening, 48 in Reading, 51 in Writing and 54 in Speaking.
Yes. You may use another approved English test such as PTE Academic, TOEFL iBT, CELPIP General, OET, MET or LANGUAGECERT Academic. You may not need to take a test if you meet an applicable exemption.
No. Completely online, at-home and remote-proctored tests are not accepted for Australian visa purposes. The approved test must be completed at a secure testing centre.
Some older results remain valid if they were taken on or before 6 August 2025, meet the older score requirements and remain within the correct visa-specific validity period. Check your visa subclass requirements before relying on an older result.
