Updated 7 September 2026 · Temporary Graduate English Guide
Current PTE Academic and IELTS scores for subclass 485, including test-date rules, validity and exemptions.
For a PTE Academic test taken on or after 7 August 2025, the standard PTE requirement for a 485 visa is an overall score of at least 55, with minimum scores of 40 in Listening, 42 in Reading, 41 in Writing and 39 in Speaking.
This guide explains the current 485 visa English requirements, the exact PTE score for 485 visa applications, the IELTS alternative, and why older online score tables should not be used for a new 2026 test.
Quick answer: The current 485 visa PTE score is 55 overall, with Listening 40, Reading 42, Writing 41 and Speaking 39 for tests taken from 7 August 2025. The result must generally be achieved in the one-year period immediately before the visa application.
PTE score required for 485 visa in 2026
The following table applies to the usual subclass 485 English requirement where the PTE Academic test was taken on or after 7 August 2025. It is relevant to primary applications in the Post-Vocational Education Work and Post-Higher Education Work streams, subject to any specific exemption or transitional rule.

VEM’s Temporary Graduate visa 485 guide places the English test alongside the age, Australian study, health insurance and stream-specific requirements.
The minimum PTE score for 485 visa purposes is not one number: it is 55 overall plus all four skill minima. These PTE requirements for 485 visa applicants should be checked against the score report before any non-refundable application charge is paid.

New PTE requirement for 485 visa
Australia changed accepted English tests and score settings on 7 August 2025. The relevant table can depend on when the test was taken and when the visa is lodged. A screenshot of an old blog post is not a safe substitute for checking the instrument and current Home Affairs page.

Do not use the “Competent English” PTE table
Subclass 485 has its own prescribed English benchmark. The PTE component scores used to prove Competent English for points-tested or employer-sponsored visas are different. Matching the wrong table can invalidate an otherwise time-sensitive graduate application.
485 visa IELTS requirement and & accepted tests
PTE is not compulsory. Applicants may use an accepted secure-centre English test that meets the subclass 485 score table. IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training are both accepted for this visa purpose, provided the correct score and test conditions are met.

485 visa IELTS General or Academic?
Either IELTS Academic or General Training can satisfy the visa English criterion. Choose based on availability, strengths and any separate professional-registration or skills assessment requirement. A registration body may insist on Academic IELTS even though Home Affairs accepts General Training for subclass 485.
Can scores from multiple attempts be combined?
Plan on meeting all required scores in one accepted test sitting. Do not combine Listening from one PTE report with Writing from another. Likewise, IELTS One Skill Retake is not accepted for subclass 485 under the general Home Affairs English guidance, even where it may be usable for some other visas.

How long is a PTE result valid for a 485 visa?
For the standard subclass 485 English criterion, the qualifying result must generally have been achieved no more than one year immediately before the date of visa application. This visa-specific period is shorter than the two-year validity commonly discussed by test providers and shorter than periods used for some other Australian visas.
Calculate from the test date, not the score-release date
Use the date the approved test was taken unless the governing rule states otherwise. Do not calculate from when Pearson emailed the result, when a university accepted it or when the course finished. Leave a practical buffer so a delayed lodgement does not push the result outside one year.
Example of the one-year rule
If the accepted test was taken on 20 October 2025, an application lodged in September 2026 may still fall within one year. An application delayed until 21 October 2026 would ordinarily be too late to rely on that result. Exact date calculations and time zones should be checked before submission.

Can I apply for a 485 visa without IELTS or PTE?
Yes, in two different senses. First, an applicant may use another accepted English test instead of IELTS or PTE. Second, a primary applicant holding a valid passport from the United Kingdom, United States of America, Canada, New Zealand or the Republic of Ireland is generally exempt from providing a test result.
Citizenship, residence and study are not the same
Living or studying in an English-speaking country does not itself create the passport exemption. The applicant needs the relevant valid passport. Australian study in English also does not automatically replace the prescribed 485 test requirement.
Hong Kong and British National Overseas passports
Eligible Hong Kong and British National Overseas passport holders have specific subclass 485 concessions, including treatment of the increased English benchmark. They should check the separate score and visa settings rather than assuming either the five-country passport exemption or the standard 55-point PTE table applies unchanged.
When must the English result be ready?
The safest and generally required approach is to hold evidence of the qualifying English result when lodging the 485 application. A test booking, provisional screenshot or promise to sit later is not the same as a qualifying result. Because subclass 485 has strict application timing linked to recent Australian study, waiting for a retest can jeopardise the entire pathway.
The English requirement for 485 visa applications is only one validity-sensitive element. It must be coordinated with completion evidence, age, visa history, health insurance and the correct graduate stream.

Common 485 visa English mistakes
- Using an outdated score: relying on PTE 50/36 or another historical table for a 2026 application.
- Missing one component: achieving 55 overall but falling one point below Reading, Writing or another skill.
- Applying the wrong English category: using the separate Competent English table.
- Expired evidence: treating a two-year-old PTE report as valid because Pearson still displays it.
- Unaccepted delivery: using an at-home test or unsupported score combination.
- Confusing course and visa English: assuming university admission proves the migration criterion.
- Leaving no retest window: sitting the first test immediately before the graduate-visa deadline.

Why ranking pages show conflicting numbers
Several pages still quote rules from before March 2024 or before 7 August 2025. Others update the overall score but retain old component minima. A reliable comparison must record the test date, visa application date, exact subclass and stream—not just the words “485 PTE requirement”.
How to plan PTE for a 485 application
1. Map the deadline
Check course completion, current visa expiry, age, location and the last safe 485 lodgement date.
2. Test early enough
Allow time for score release and at least one retest without letting the result become more than one year old.
3. Target the weakest skill
Build a margin above each component minimum rather than preparing only for overall 55.
4. Verify before payment
Recheck the current Home Affairs page, result validity and every other time-of-application criterion.
The English-test booking fee is separate from the government application charge. Retesting increases the total budget. VEM’s 485 visa fee guide explains current applicant charges and other costs, while its Australia visa processing time guide gives the latest decision-time context.

Frequently asked questions
What PTE score is required for a 485 visa in 2026?
For PTE Academic tests taken on or after 7 August 2025, the standard requirement is 55 overall, with Listening 40, Reading 42, Writing 41 and Speaking 39.
Is PTE 55 enough for a 485 visa?
Only if the applicant also has at least 40 in Listening, 42 in Reading, 41 in Writing and 39 in Speaking, and the test satisfies the date, validity and delivery requirements.
Can I apply for a 485 visa without IELTS?
Yes. You may use PTE Academic or another accepted test. Holders of valid passports from the UK, USA, Canada, New Zealand or Republic of Ireland are generally exempt from providing a test result.
Does the 485 visa accept IELTS General Training?
Yes. Home Affairs accepts IELTS Academic or General Training for this purpose. The standard score is 6.5 overall with at least 5.5 in every component.
How long is PTE valid for the 485 visa?
The qualifying result must generally have been achieved within one year immediately before the visa application. Do not rely on a broader test-provider validity period.
Can I combine two PTE test results?
No. Plan to meet the overall and all four component scores in one accepted test sitting. Scores from different attempts should not be mixed.
Can I lodge the 485 visa before receiving my PTE result?
The safe and generally required position is to hold qualifying English evidence at application. A booking or result expected later is not equivalent to meeting a time-of-application criterion.
Is the PTE requirement the same as Competent English?
No. Subclass 485 has its own English score table. Do not substitute the PTE scores used to establish Competent English for other skilled visas.
