Australia Visa Price Estimator – How To Use It?

VEM Visa | Australian Visa Cost Planning

A practical guide to estimating government visa application charges and building a realistic budget before lodgement.

The Australia visa price estimator is the Department of Home Affairs tool for estimating the government charge for a visa application. It is useful when you know the Australian visa types and stream you intend to apply for, the expected lodgement date, and who will be included in the application.

Use the official result: The estimator can help with government-charge planning, but it does not confirm visa eligibility and does not include every possible application expense.

What is the Australia Visa Price Estimator?

The official estimator provides a basic indication of the visa application charge in Australian dollars. The result is generated based on your visa stream, proposed application date, applicant location, and the number and ages of any additional applicants.

A visa application charge may have more than one component. Home Affairs explains that the charge can include a first instalment payable when the application is made.

And for some visas, a second instalment is payable before grant. Either instalment may be nil in some circumstances. The result can also differ when a concession, exemption or additional charge applies.

What it can estimate

The government visa charge based on the selections and applicant details entered into the tool.

What it cannot confirm

Whether you meet the visa criteria, whether the visa will be granted or how long a decision will take.

What sits outside it

Health, police, testing, assessment, translation, travel and professional-service costs, plus some pathway-specific expenses.

Use the official Home Affairs Visa Pricing Estimator as the source for your calculation. A third-party calculator can explain cost categories, but it should not replace the official result used before lodgement.

How to use the visa fee estimator

Open the official Home Affairs visa fee estimator after identifying the visa you intend to apply for. The form asks a short series of questions and uses your answers to estimate the government visa application charge.

Step 1. Select “What visa are you applying for?”

Open the drop-down list and choose the exact visa you plan to lodge. Check both the visa name and subclass number before moving on.

If you have not yet chosen a pathway, review the main Australian visa types first.

Step 2. Select your country of passport

Under “Please select your country of passport?”, choose the country that issued the main applicant’s current passport.

Step 3. Enter the expected lodgement date

For “What date will you be lodging your application?”, type the expected date or choose it with the calendar icon.

Step 4. Count additional applicants aged 18 or older

Use the first applicant-number menu to enter how many people included in the same application will be 18 years of age or older when the application is lodged.

Depending on the visa, this group may include a partner or an eligible adult dependent. If no additional applicant will be 18 or older, select zero.

Step 5. Count additional applicants younger than 18

Use the next menu to enter the number of additional applicants who will be younger than 18 on the expected lodgement date.

If a child’s 18th birthday falls close to lodgement, recalculate using the age that will apply on the actual submission date.

Step 6. Get Estimate

Select the Get Estimate button to generate the result. Review the amount and any breakdown or explanatory notes displayed by the tool, including a first instalment, possible second instalment or additional charge where relevant.

Why two visa pricing estimator results can be different

Two applicants researching the same subclass can receive different results. The tool is responding to their selected circumstances, not publishing one universal price for the visa name.

Subclass and stream

Why it matters: Different pathways and streams can use different charge structures.

Common mistake: Selecting the closest-sounding option instead of the intended application.

Application date

Why it matters: The charge is generally linked to the date Home Affairs receives the application.

Common mistake: Using the date research began or an online draft was created.

Applicant location

Why it matters: Some additional charges depend on whether a person applies in Australia.

Common mistake: Entering nationality when the tool is asking for physical location.

Additional applicants

Why it matters: A combined application can include separate charges for family members.

Common mistake: Calculating only for the main applicant.

Age of dependants

Why it matters: Additional applicant charges can differ by age category.

Common mistake: Using age at the start of planning rather than at intended lodgement.

Previous visa history

Why it matters: A subsequent temporary application charge can apply to certain people and temporary visas.

Common mistake: Assuming everyone in a family has the same charge history.

Costs the Australia visa price estimator not include

The result should sit inside a wider budget. The exact extra costs depend on the route and personal history; not every applicant will need every item.

  • Health examinations: Fees are generally paid to the approved clinic or panel physician.
  • Police and character documents: Charges for police checks can vary by issuing country and certificate type.
  • Biometrics: A service fee may apply if biometrics are requested through a collection centre.
  • English testing and skills assessment: These can be high pre-lodgement costs for skilled pathways. See the VEM skills assessment guide.
  • Translations, certification and document delivery: Non-English evidence may need English translation.
  • Nomination, sponsorship or employer-side charges: Some skilled and employer-sponsored routes involve separate payments and legal responsibilities.
  • Assurance of Support or bond: Certain family pathways can involve separate financial requirements.
  • Professional fees: Migration-agent or legal-service fees are separate from government charges.
  • Payment surcharge: Home Affairs says a surcharge may apply to card and PayPal payments; check the current rate for your payment method.

Build a realistic Australian visa budget

A useful budget separates confirmed charges from allowances. This makes it easier to update one category without rebuilding the whole plan when a fee, test or document requirement changes.

Government visa charge
Record the official estimator result, selections and review date. Note any second instalment separately.
Evidence costs
List likely health, police, biometrics, testing, assessment and translation expenses.
Pathway costs
Separate nomination, sponsorship, levy, assurance or other route-specific amounts.
Payment and timing buffer
Allow for payment surcharge, exchange-rate movement and a possible fee update before lodgement.
Professional support
Request a written scope and fee schedule if engaging a registered migration agent or lawyer.

Plan for the possibility of no refund: Home Affairs says visa application charges are not usually refunded simply because an application is refused, withdrawn or no longer pursued. Check the official refund rules before assuming any amount is recoverable.

Common visa fee estimator mistakes

  • Relying on a screenshot from last year: A saved figure does not update when government charges change.
  • Choosing a visa by price: Eligibility and purpose determine the pathway; a cheaper visa is not an alternative if its criteria do not fit.
  • Forgetting family members: The main applicant’s charge is not necessarily the total for a combined application.
  • Treating the estimate as the full budget: Evidence, assessment and route-specific costs can be material.
  • Ignoring a possible second instalment: Some visas can require a later payment before grant.
  • Assuming payment proves eligibility: Paying the charge allows the application to be considered; it does not guarantee a grant.

The calculator can estimate a charge, but it cannot tell you whether the selected visa fits your circumstances. A pre-lodgement review can help identify the right subclass, applicant structure, evidence plan and costs that need individual assessment.

FAQs

Is the Australia visa price estimator official?

The estimator hosted on the Department of Home Affairs website is the official tool. Use that version for a current estimate and confirm the amount shown during lodgement.

Is a visa fee estimator result a guaranteed quote?

No. It is an estimate based on the information entered. The payable amount depends on the application details and rules in force when Home Affairs receives the application.

Does the visa pricing estimator include my partner and children?

Only if the tool allows them for the selected application and you enter each additional applicant correctly. Their charges can vary by age and circumstances.

Does the estimate include medicals and police checks?

Generally, no. Health examinations, police certificates, biometrics, translations and similar evidence costs are usually paid separately to the relevant provider.

Why did my visa estimate increase?

Possible reasons include a fee update, a different intended lodgement date, a changed stream, additional family members or answers that trigger another applicable charge. Compare the inputs line by line.

Can I get the visa application charge back if the visa is refused?

Usually not simply because of a refusal or withdrawal. Refunds are governed by specific rules and exceptions, so use the current Home Affairs refund guidance for your situation.
