An invitation letter for tourist visa Australia is a supporting statement written by the person inviting a relative or friend to visit. It helps explain who the visitor will see, why they are travelling, where they will stay, how long the visit will last, and who will pay particular expenses.
The letter does not grant sponsorship status by itself and cannot guarantee approval. The applicant must still meet the Visitor visa requirements, including being a genuine temporary visitor and providing credible evidence of funds, circumstances and reasons to return home. Quick answer: Write a dated and signed letter identifying the host and visitor, their relationship, purpose and exact proposed dates, accommodation, planned activities and financial arrangements. Attach evidence that supports the claims. Keep it factual, consistent with the visa application, and usually around one to two pages.
What is an invitation letter for an Australian tourist visa?
A visitor visa letter of invitation gives Home Affairs context for the proposed trip. It connects the applicant’s itinerary to a real person and address in Australia and can support evidence of family contact, accommodation or financial assistance.
The host may be an Australian citizen, permanent resident or, depending on the circumstances and stream, another person lawfully in Australia. The host’s status should be stated accurately and proved with appropriate documents. Do not describe a temporary visa holder as an Australian “sponsor” where no formal sponsorship exists.
An invitation is not the applicant’s genuine visitor statement
The host explains the invitation from the Australian side. The applicant should separately explain their own purpose, funding, employment or study, family and economic commitments, travel history and intention to comply with the permitted stay. A warm letter from a relative does not replace evidence about the visitor’s life outside Australia.
Is an invitation letter for a tourist visa mandatory?
There is no single mandatory invitation-letter template for every Tourist stream application. It is particularly useful where the applicant will visit family or friends, stay in a private home, attend a family event or receive financial support. A person travelling only for hotels and independent tourism may instead rely on an itinerary, accommodation bookings and their own financial evidence.
For the Sponsored Family stream, Home Affairs specifically asks for evidence of the relationship and a family invitation letter, but formal sponsorship requirements also apply. An invitation letter for travel visa purposes must therefore match the actual subclass 600 stream rather than being copied without context.
A letter cannot overcome weak or inconsistent evidence
Home Affairs assesses the whole application. Contradictory travel dates, unexplained funding, vague relationships or little evidence of return incentives can remain concerns even if the host promises accommodation and support.

How long should the letter be?
One to two pages is normally enough. The strongest letter is specific and verifiable, not long. Use short paragraphs, headings where helpful, and the same names, passport number, dates, addresses, and funding arrangement shown elsewhere in the application.

Sample invitation letter for Australian tourist visa for a sister
A sibling letter should explain both the family relationship and the specific visit. For example:

Is an invitation letter required for an Australian tourist visa?
Not for every Tourist stream application, but it is useful where the visitor will see family or friends, stay with a host or receive support. Sponsored Family applications have additional formal requirements.
Who can write an invitation letter for a visitor visa?
The person genuinely inviting the applicant should write it and state their exact status in Australia. Formal Sponsored Family sponsors must separately satisfy the prescribed eligibility rules.
Can a student visa holder invite family to Australia?
A student can write a truthful invitation supporting a relative’s Tourist stream application and provide evidence of their visa and address. That does not necessarily make them eligible as a formal Sponsored Family sponsor.
Does the host need to pay for the visitor’s trip?
No. The visitor may self-fund, the host may pay specified expenses, or costs may be shared. The letter and financial documents should state the true arrangement consistently.
