186 Visa Processing Times In 2026

Updated 2026 processing guide

Current subclass 186 timeframes by stream, the new skilled-visa priority order and practical guidance for nomination, medicals and delayed applications.

The latest published 186 visa processing time varies by stream. Figures checked against the Department of Home Affairs processing guide on 2 August 2026 showed that 50% of Direct Entry applications were decided within 10 months and 90% within 14 months. For Temporary Residence Transition (TRT), the corresponding figures were 9 and 14 months; for Labour Agreement, 8 and 11 months.

Quick answer: In August 2026, most recently decided subclass 186 files fell within an 8-to-14-month range at the 50% and 90% markers. A medical completion, nomination approval or ImmiAccount status change does not create a fixed grant date.

The most useful comparison is the 50% marker, how long half of recently finalised applications took, and the 90% marker. The slowest 10% took longer than the figure shown.

Subclass 186 stream 50% finalised 90% finalised Typical applicant profile
Direct Entry 10 months 14 months Skilled worker using the Direct Entry eligibility route
Temporary Residence Transition 9 months 14 months Eligible temporary sponsored worker transitioning with their employer
Labour Agreement 8 months 11 months Worker nominated under an applicable labour agreement

Processing data is a snapshot

The Home Affairs guide is updated regularly. It measures cases completed in a recent reporting period and can move up or down as the mix and volume of decisions changes. Check it again before publishing, lodging or making employment and travel decisions.

Processing time by subclass 186 stream

186 Direct Entry

Current markers: 10 months for 50% and 14 months for 90%. A valid skills assessment where required, competent English and evidence of relevant employment are common critical-path items.

186 TRT

Current markers: 9 months for 50% and 14 months for 90%. Prior 482 sponsorship does not guarantee quicker processing or establish that every TRT requirement is met.

186 Labour Agreement

Current markers: 8 months for 50% and 11 months for 90%. The employer’s agreement terms, nomination ceiling, occupation and any concessions must align with the application.

Choose the stream based on legal eligibility, not the shortest published processing time. A person eligible for TRT is not automatically eligible for Direct Entry, and a Labour Agreement stream is available only where the employer and position fall under an applicable agreement. For eligibility context, read VEM’s subclass 186 visa guide.

Latest news about 186 visa processing time in 2026

The major 2026 update is Ministerial Direction 119, which took effect on 25 July 2026 and applies to on-hand as well as new subclass 186 nomination and visa applications. It replaced the skilled-visa priorities under Direction 105.

Priority 1 – 2: law-enforcement or defence-related occupations, with applicants in Australia ahead of applicants outside Australia.
Priority 3: construction, healthcare and teaching occupations where the applicant was in Australia at application.
Priority 4: all other covered applications where the applicant was in Australia at application.
Priority 5: all other covered applications where the applicant was outside Australia at application.

Priority determines the order in which applications are considered; it does not waive requirements or guarantee a particular result. Home Affairs applies the order internally, so applicants do not file a separate request merely to be placed in the correct group.

A realistic 186 visa processing timeline

A subclass 186 case has two connected parts: the employer nomination and the worker’s visa application. They can often be lodged close together, but both must succeed for the visa to be granted.

1. Preparation

Employer eligibility, position, salary and business evidence are coordinated with the applicant’s identity, English, skills, employment and family documents.

2. Nomination and visa lodgement

The nomination is lodged by the employer. The visa application is a separate transaction and must use the correct nomination details.

3. Initial checks and queue

Home Affairs triages the file under the current priority direction. “Received” in ImmiAccount can remain unchanged for months and does not mean the application has been overlooked.

4. Assessment and external checks

The case officer may assess the nomination and visa, verify employment, request health or character information and seek further documents from either party.

5. Decision

Nomination approval alone is not visa approval. The visa is decided only after all applicant requirements and relevant checks are satisfied.

186 visa processing time after medical

There is no official fixed timeframe from medical clearance to grant. A health result marked as finalised can remove one outstanding requirement, but the employer nomination, identity, character, employment, skills and security checks may still be pending.

Medical completed does not mean “decision ready”

Some applicants receive a decision soon after health clearance; others wait months. Online anecdotes cannot predict your case because they rarely show the stream, priority, nomination status or other checks.

Health examinations are commonly valid for 12 months, but Home Affairs decides whether new examinations or further specialist reports are required. Avoid arranging an upfront medical unless the application process permits it and the timing makes sense.

186 visa nomination processing time

Home Affairs does not promise that the nomination and visa will be decided together. A nomination query can hold up the whole pathway even when the applicant’s documents are complete. Common focus areas include whether the business is actively operating, whether the position is genuine and available for the required period, salary and market-rate evidence, occupation alignment and the employer’s ability to meet obligations.

If the nomination is approved first, the visa application remains subject to its own requirements. If the nomination is refused or withdrawn, the visa cannot be granted on that nomination and urgent advice may be required about review rights, withdrawal and current visa status.

The public visa-processing percentiles should not be treated as a separate nomination calculator. Employers and applicants should monitor both applications and coordinate responses so that the evidence remains consistent.

What can make a 186 visa take longer?

Incomplete or inconsistent evidence

Missing documents, conflicting dates or nomination and visa claims that do not match can lead to further enquiries.

Employer assessment

Complex business structures, weak financial evidence or questions about the nominated role can extend nomination processing.

Health and character

Specialist medical review, namesakes, military history or police certificates from several countries may require more time.

Direct Entry skills evidence

A late, expired or unsuitable skills assessment can create serious delay or refusal risk where an assessment is required at the relevant time.

Processing priority

Under Direction 119, occupation and the applicant’s location at lodgement affect queue position.

Changes after lodgement

Passport, relationship, newborn-child, address, job or business changes can require new evidence and assessment.

Can you speed up a 186 application?

There is no general paid priority service and no legitimate way to purchase a faster place in the queue. The practical goal is to avoid preventable delay:

  • Lodge nomination and visa evidence that is complete, current and mutually consistent.
  • Upload documents under clear labels and provide certified translations where required.
  • Respond to every Home Affairs request by the deadline and coordinate the employer’s response.
  • Keep passport, contact information and family details current in ImmiAccount.
  • Do not send repeated status requests while the application remains within the published range.

If a case is outside the 90% timeframe, first confirm the correct stream and latest guide date, then check ImmiAccount, email and spam folders. Home Affairs enquiry or feedback channels may be appropriate, but contacting the Department does not guarantee escalation or approval.

482 to 186 visa processing time

The often-searched phrase “482 to 186 processing time” can mean two different periods. First is the time needed to become eligible for the TRT stream under the rules that apply to the worker and employment. Second is the Home Affairs processing time after the 186 nomination and visa are lodged.

The current TRT decision markers – 9 months for 50% and 14 months for 90% + cover only the lodged 186 application. They do not include time already spent on a 482 visa, preparation, skills or English evidence, nomination work, or any review proceeding.

A 482 holder should also check visa expiry, work conditions, bridging arrangements and travel plans. Lodging a 186 application does not automatically erase the conditions on the visa currently in effect.

FAQs

How long does a 186 visa take to process?

Figures checked on 2 August 2026 ranged from 8 months for 50% of Labour Agreement cases to 14 months for 90% of TRT cases. Your application can fall outside those markers.

What is the 186 Direct Entry processing time?

As at the cited August 2026 snapshot, 50% of Direct Entry applications were finalised within 10 months and 90% within 14 months.

How long after medicals is a 186 visa granted?

There is no standard period. Medical clearance completes only one part of the assessment; nomination, character, employment and security checks may remain outstanding.

Does nomination approval mean the 186 visa will be granted soon?

Not necessarily. Nomination approval is important, but the applicant must independently satisfy all visa requirements before Home Affairs can grant the visa.

Can changing employer affect a pending 186 visa?

It can have serious implications because the visa relies on the approved employer nomination and the nominated position. Obtain individual advice before changing employment or assuming another employer can take over the application.
