Western Australia Skilled Migration

Western Australia State Nomination can support eligible skilled migrants seeking the Skilled Nominated visa (subclass 190) or the Skilled Work Regional visa (subclass 491). Nomination is an invitation pathway, not a visa grant.

Program-status note, checked July 2026: the official WA SNMP page currently presents 2025–26 criteria. Use this guide for planning, but check WA Migration Services before lodging because the next program year, invitation settings, occupation lists, priorities and allocations can change.

What is Western Australia State Nomination?

Western Australia’s State Nominated Migration Program (SNMP) is a State selection pathway for eligible skilled migrants. WA Migration Services may nominate applicants for two points-tested visas: subclass 190, a permanent visa, and subclass 491, a provisional regional visa. State nomination adds points to the Commonwealth points test, but it does not remove the need to meet federal visa criteria or guarantee a visa grant.

The process begins with an Expression of Interest (EOI) in SkillSelect. WA assesses invitations against its own priorities, eligible occupation lists and stream requirements. A points score of 65 is the federal pass mark, not a promise of an invitation.

2025–26 WA SNMP snapshot

Item Current published position What it means
Program streams General stream and Graduate stream Your stream determines the occupation list and evidence requirements.
2025–26 allocation 2,000 places for 190; 1,400 places for 491 Allocation is not a grant target and can change each program year.
Occupation priorities WA identifies priority industry sectors in its program settings. A listed occupation is not a job offer and does not guarantee an invitation.
Applicant commitment Successful nominees agree to work, live and settle in WA. This is a WA nomination commitment; 491 holders also have federal regional conditions.

WA visa 190 occupation list: how it works

The phrase “190 visa WA occupation list” usually refers to the WA Skilled Migration Occupation List (WASMOL). WA’s published program uses three practical routes:

General stream: Schedule 1

Health and medical occupations. The 2025–26 criteria include relevant experience and, for 190, a qualifying WA contract.

General stream: Schedule 2

Other eligible occupations. For 190, a qualifying WA contract is generally required, with published building and construction exceptions.

Graduate stream: GOL

For eligible international graduates with a Certificate III or higher qualification and the required study completed in WA.

Always check the live list for the nominated occupation, intended visa subclass and stream. A role appearing on WASMOL does not represent a specific vacancy, employment offer or guaranteed invitation.

WA DAMA is a separate employer-sponsored pathway.

Applicants searching for the dama visa occupation list wa should use the official WA DAMA occupation list. The WA DAMA is not part of WASMOL or the State nomination invitation process for subclass 190 and 491. It is a labour-agreement pathway that requires an eligible WA employer, employer endorsement and a supported occupation. An occupation appearing on the DAMA list does not itself provide a job offer, sponsorship or visa grant.

Western Australia State Nomination eligibility

Applicants need to satisfy both Home Affairs visa criteria and WA’s stream-specific criteria. The exact checklist depends on the visa and occupation, but the planning baseline is below.

Federal baseline for 190 and 491: a suitable occupation, a matching positive skills assessment, competent English, enough points, age eligibility and a complete EOI/visa record. Meeting the pass mark does not compel WA to invite you.

WA baseline: the occupation must be eligible in the relevant WA list, and claims in your EOI must be supportable at invitation and State nomination application stage.

General stream: Schedule 1

  • Occupation must be available for the intended 190 or 491 visa.
  • At least one year of Australian or overseas work experience in the nominated or closely related occupation over the last 10 years, as defined by WA.
  • For 190, a WA full-time contract for at least six months from application date is required under the published criteria.

General stream: Schedule 2

  • Occupation must be available for the intended visa subclass.
  • For 190, a qualifying full-time WA contract is generally required; building and construction occupations listed by WA can be exempt.
  • For 491, the published General stream criteria do not require an employment contract.

Graduate stream

  • Your occupation must be listed and available for your intended visa subclass.
  • You need a Certificate III or higher qualification from an accredited WA institution.
  • The published criteria require at least two years of full-time study completed in WA.

English and skills assessment

WA’s published 2025–26 minimum English level is Competent English. English tests and scoring rules changed from 7 August 2025, so do not reuse an old PTE or IELTS conversion table without checking the current Home Affairs and WA guidance. A provisional skills assessment issued for the 485 visa is not accepted for WA State nomination.

How to apply for WA State Nomination

  1. Choose the right visa and pathway. Check whether 190 or 491 best matches your points, occupation and location plans.
  2. Confirm your occupation and assessing authority. Match your occupation, skills assessment and WA list.
  3. Build an evidence-ready EOI. Enter accurate claims in SkillSelect and select Western Australia or any State/Territory as appropriate.
  4. Wait for a WA invitation. WA invitation ranking and priorities are State-controlled and can change.
  5. Lodge the State nomination application. Upload stream-specific evidence and pay the current WA fee by the deadline.
  6. Receive WA nomination in SkillSelect. If approved, Home Affairs can issue the visa invitation.
  7. Lodge the visa application within the federal timeframe. The visa is assessed by Home Affairs, separately from the State nomination decision.

  • Positive skills assessment
  • English evidence where required
  • Qualifications and transcripts
  • Accurate SkillSelect EOI claims

  • Payslips and employer references for Schedule 1 experience
  • Qualifying WA employment contract for 190 where required
  • Evidence of a genuine business and market salary where requested

Graduate stream evidence

  • WA qualification and academic records
  • Evidence of required WA study duration

WA nomination cost and processing time

The WA 2025–26 criteria state a non-refundable AUD 200 State nomination application fee. This is separate from skills assessment, English testing, health checks, police certificates, translation, visa application charges and professional fees.

Do not publish a fixed WA invitation or nomination processing time. WA handles its own invitation and nomination stages, while Home Affairs separately assesses the visa. Both stages depend on priorities, application completeness, demand and program settings. Check the WA SNMP page and Home Affairs Global Visa Processing Times immediately before lodging.

Planning rule: keep your occupation, skills assessment, English, work experience, contract and EOI claims consistent. A mismatch between the EOI and the evidence at invitation can undo an otherwise viable application.

After nomination: settlement and regional commitments

WA states that applicants invited for State nomination agree to work, live and settle in Western Australia. For the 491 pathway, holders also need to comply with their federal regional conditions. Perth and surrounding areas can be treated as regional for the WA State-nominated 491 program, but always confirm the current postcode and condition position before relying on this for a job or relocation decision.

Western Australia 190 visa FAQs

Does WA 190 nomination guarantee a visa?

No. WA nomination is a State step. Home Affairs still assesses the federal visa application and all visa criteria.

Is 65 points enough for a WA 190 visa?

65 is the federal pass mark. It does not guarantee a WA invitation or nomination, and applicants must meet both State and federal requirements.

Do I need a job offer for visa 190 Western Australia?

Under the published 2025–26 General stream criteria, a full-time WA contract is generally required for 190. Building and construction exceptions are published by WA. Requirements can change by stream and year.

Can an occupation on the WA 190 occupation list guarantee an invitation?

No. The list determines potential eligibility, not a job vacancy or an invitation outcome. WA may update occupation settings and priorities.

What is the difference between WA 190 and WA 491?

WA 190 is permanent on grant and adds 5 nomination points. WA 491 is provisional, adds 15 points and carries regional living and working conditions.

Is the WA DAMA occupation list the same as WASMOL?

No. WASMOL supports WA State nomination pathways such as subclass 190 and 491. The official WA DAMA occupation list supports a separate employer-sponsored labour-agreement pathway. DAMA access requires an eligible employer and does not operate through a WA State nomination EOI invitation.

Need a WA 190 or WA 491 eligibility review?

A useful assessment starts with the occupation list, skills assessment, points claims, English evidence and the correct WA stream, not a vague promise about “easy State nomination”.
