Updated 2026 Guide | Skills in Demand Visa
Current IELTS, PTE and alternative test scores for subclass 482, plus the official English-language exemptions.
It is possible to obtain a subclass 482 visa Australia without IELTS, but “without IELTS” does not always mean “without English evidence”. A primary applicant can meet the requirement through another approved test such as PTE Academic, qualify for a prescribed exemption, or meet a different concession written into an applicable Labour Agreement.
Current core score: for tests taken on or after 13 September 2025, IELTS requires at least 5.0 in each skill. PTE Academic requires Listening 33, Reading 36, Writing 29 and Speaking 24.
The Skills in Demand (SID) subclass 482 replaced the Temporary Skill Shortage visa for new applications on 7 December 2024. Old webpages often describe the former Short-term and Medium-term streams or quote one PTE 36 score for every component. The test date and current SID rules must be checked before relying on those figures. See VEM’s subclass 482 Skills in Demand guide for the wider sponsorship requirements.
Can you apply for a 482 visa without IELTS?
Yes, through one of three legitimate routes:
Use another test
PTE Academic, TOEFL iBT, OET, CELPIP General, LANGUAGECERT Academic or MET may replace IELTS when current score rules are met.
Claim an exemption
Passport, English-medium study, licensing, diplomatic or qualifying high-income intra-company transfer exemptions may apply.
Labour Agreement terms
An approved agreement may specify an English concession or a different level for the nominated occupation.
An employer’s willingness to sponsor, an English-speaking workplace or a high salary alone does not waive the requirement. The applicant must satisfy a test threshold or fit the exact terms of an exemption or agreement.

Each component threshold must be met in the accepted test result. A strong overall score does not compensate for one component below the minimum. The test must be taken at a secure test centre; completely online or at-home versions are not accepted for Australian visa purposes.
TOEFL applicants must select the Australian pathway
When registering for TOEFL iBT, select “Taking TOEFL for Australia”. Home Affairs warns that results not registered through this pathway may not be accepted. TOEFL Home Edition is not an accepted substitute.
PTE score for 482 visa applications
For a PTE Academic test taken on or after 13 September 2025, the 482 visa PTE score requirement is:
A result such as Listening 35, Reading 38, Writing 31, and Speaking 23 does not meet the requirement because Speaking is below 24. Do not compare a current PTE score with the older “36 in each component” rule without checking the test date.

What if the English test was taken before 13 September 2025?
The 482-specific change took effect on 13 September 2025. A still-valid test taken before that date may be assessed under the previous thresholds. Common former minimums included:
- IELTS: at least 5.0 in each component;
- PTE Academic: at least 36 in each component;
- OET: at least grade B in each component;
- TOEFL iBT: at least 4 in Listening and Reading and 14 in Writing and Speaking;
- Cambridge C1 Advanced: at least 154 in each component under the former framework.
Test validity is generally linked to the three years before the visa application, but transitional rules, provider validity and the date the visa is lodged must be checked. Cambridge is not in the current post-13 September 2025 subclass 482 table.
482 visa English requirements exemptions
The main 482 visa English requirements exemption categories are summarised below. Every exemption has defined conditions and requires appropriate evidence.
| Exemption |
Core requirement |
Useful evidence |
| Specified passport |
Valid passport from Canada, New Zealand, Ireland, the United Kingdom or the United States. |
Current passport bio page. |
| Five years of study |
At least five years of full-time study at secondary level or higher with instruction in English. |
Transcripts, completion records and medium-of-instruction letters. |
| Licence or registration |
The occupation requires licensing, registration or membership and the applicant has already met a qualifying English standard for it. |
Current registration and regulator’s English assessment requirements. |
| Diplomatic or consular workplace |
Nomination for specified work at a foreign diplomatic or consular mission or an Office of the Authorities of Taiwan. |
Nomination, mission and position documentation. |
| High-income intra-company transfer |
Qualifying overseas-business employment and nomination by the same or associated entity, with annual earnings of at least AUD 96,400. |
Corporate relationship, overseas employment and guaranteed remuneration records. |
Salary of AUD 96,400 alone is not enough
The high-income exemption is not a general exemption for every well-paid 482 applicant. It is tied to specified intra-company transfer circumstances involving an established overseas business and the same or an associated sponsoring entity.

How the five-year English-medium study exemption works
The study exemption is frequently misunderstood. The applicant generally needs at least five cumulative years of full-time study at secondary level or higher where instruction was in English. Simply studying English as a subject, attending a bilingual institution, or supplying one generic “medium of instruction” letter may not establish the full period.
- List every institution, qualification, start date, and completion date used to reach five years.
- Provide official transcripts and completion certificates.
- Obtain letters confirming full-time enrolment and English as the language of instruction.
- Explain transfers, gaps, part-time periods or overlapping study.
- Include certified translations where original records are not in English.
Home Affairs, not the school, decides whether the legal exemption is met. If evidence is incomplete or timing is borderline, an approved test can be a more predictable option.
Labour Agreement stream English concessions
A Labour Agreement can specify English requirements that differ from the standard Core Skills or Specialist Skills settings. Industry agreements, company-specific agreements and Designated Area Migration Agreements may contain occupation-specific concessions and conditions.
A sponsor cannot invent a concession. The signed agreement must cover the business, nominated occupation and proposed worker, and the applicant must meet its stated level. Some occupations still require higher English for workplace safety, licensing or registration even where the visa agreement permits a lower score.
Documents for the 482 visa English requirement
Test pathway
Official test report, test date, candidate number and permission for Home Affairs to verify the result.
Study exemption
Transcripts, certificates, full-time attendance and English-medium confirmation covering at least five years.
Corporate exemption
Overseas employment, corporate association, nomination and guaranteed annual earnings evidence.
The English requirement generally applies to the primary subclass 482 applicant. Secondary family members are not ordinarily required to provide the same test result for the 482 application, although future visa pathways may impose their own English rules.

Visa English vs professional registration English
An immigration exemption does not override a regulator, licensing body or employer. Nurses, doctors, teachers and many trades may need a higher score or a different evidence pathway before they can lawfully practise. For example, meeting IELTS 5.0 for the visa does not establish a healthcare regulator’s professional English standard.
Check three separate layers: the subclass 482 visa requirement, any skills assessment requirement and the occupation’s licensing or registration standard. The highest practical requirement may determine which test and score the applicant should target.
Does a 482 English exemption carry over to PR?
Not automatically. A later Employer Nomination Scheme subclass 186 application has its own English criteria, commonly Competent English unless a specific exemption applies. The subclass 482 high-income or study exemption should not be assumed to satisfy the 186 requirement.
If permanent residence is the goal, plan English early. A score sufficient for subclass 482 may be below the score required for registration, points-tested migration or subclass 186. See VEM’s subclass 186 visa guide.
Common 482 English mistakes
- Using an overall score: overlooking one component below the minimum.
- Applying old PTE 36 rules: failing to identify whether the test was before or after 13 September 2025.
- Taking an online test: using IELTS Online, PTE online or another at-home product not accepted for visa purposes.
- Assuming nationality is enough: the passport exemption is limited to the five specified countries.
- Weak study evidence: providing a degree certificate without proving five years, full-time status, and English instruction.
- Misusing the salary exemption: ignoring the overseas-business and associated-entity conditions.
- Ignoring registration: satisfying visa English but not the higher occupational standard.
- Assuming the exemption continues: relying on 482 evidence for a later subclass 186 application.

482 visa English requirement FAQs
Can I get a subclass 482 visa without IELTS?
Yes. You can use another approved English test, qualify for a prescribed exemption or meet an applicable Labour Agreement concession. Employer sponsorship alone does not remove the requirement.
What PTE score is required for a 482 visa?
For PTE Academic taken on or after 13 September 2025: Listening 33, Reading 36, Writing 29 and Speaking 24. Every component must meet its minimum.
What IELTS score is needed for subclass 482?
The current standard is at least IELTS 5.0 in Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. Both Academic and General Training are accepted under the current table.
Which passport holders are exempt from the test?
Applicants holding valid passports from Canada, New Zealand, the Republic of Ireland, the United Kingdom or the United States can qualify for the passport exemption.
Is every applicant earning AUD 96,400 exempt?
No. The exemption also requires qualifying employment with an established overseas business and nomination by the same business or an associated entity. Salary alone is insufficient.
